What is Argentine Tango ?
Argentine Tango is a musical style and a social partner dance
that originated in Buenos Aires, Argentina, around the 1880s. The music is a fusion of European and South American music and African rhythms.
The dance is improvisational and natural. It can be danced and enjoyed in a simple way – just by walking to the music, or using more sophisticated elements. Step sequences are not set in stone; they depend on the music, on the melody, and on how we hear it. Any steps are correct as long as they work for both leader and follower and are done to the music.
A variety of styles exists. One of them, Apilado style or social Argentine Tango (taught by Tango Bohemia), is danced at parties in a close embrace. It is a dance for you and your partner. The many subtleties and nuances of this style add to the richness of the dance. This is the same classic style danced in the salons of central Buenos Aires.
To start your experience, there is no need for special training or prior dancing history. You don’t need a permanent partner, and anybody can join the wonderful world of Argentine Tango. For many, it quickly becomes more than a dance – a lifestyle which is shared by a great many dancers worldwide…

I hope you decide to explore this wonderful world of dance. There are many opportunities for dancing Tango in Atlanta. Tango dance parties, called milongas, are held in various parts of the metro area - Decatur, Buckhead, Sandy Springs - in dance studios, art centers, colledge halls, restaurants, private homes. Even Woodstock, GA now has a quarterly milonga in a great coffee shop.
In 2005 Atlanta has become a home of the Atlanta Tango Festival - an annual event that attracts hundreds of tango dancers from around the country (and some from outside) to enjoy Southern hospitality and three days of tango workshops and dancing in downtown Decatur.
